DOOR COUNTY CHAPTER – THUMBS UP RIDERS

2012 HAPPENINGS

POWER LINE CORRIDOR – We Have contacted American Transmission regarding using the power line corridor as a horse trail. They said we would still need to obtain property owner permission. So we have started mapping the corridor and will be contacting landowners for permission. Once we have secured permission from all the landowners, American Transmission can provide us with an encroachment form that would have the plan reviewed by their Engineering and Asset Management groups. The idea is to have one main trail leading up the Peninsula linking trail loops along the way. At this time one member has volunteered a portion of their property for a trailhead.

JACKSONPORT PIT – Considering approaching the Jacksonport town board with a request to locate a trailhead on town property off Pit Road. The group is hoping to obtain landowner permission to have a primitive marked trail off the Pit. Hoping the trail would cross county A and have loops between county A and Highway 57. Would be great if we could get a trail from the pit that would take us up to Peninsula State Park as well.

GROUP RIDES – This year we are planning group rides. Group rides could be held on private trails or public trails. This will give members who have not been able to attend meetings a chance to brain storm with members who have. It will also give members a chance to ride with others and in different locations. Our first group ride is being planned for the roads in Peninsula State Park this April. Hoping to hold one group ride per month between April 1st and October 31st.

COUNTY WIDE MULTI USE TRAIL – The Door County Highway Department has contracted with the Wisconsin Bicycle Federation to plan a multi-use trail leading to Gills Rock. According to the Door County Smart Growth Plan, this trail should include a side trail for snowmobiling, horseback riding, hiking, & biking. Thumbs Up Riders hopes to provide a voice for the horse community on this project.

FUNDRAISERS – Thumbs Up Riders is planning horse/pony rides at Grandma Tommy’s on Highway 42 in Sturgeon Bay, May 27, 2012. Also a Trail Challenge is tentatively scheduled for June 24th on the trails behind C&W Auto. We are hoping to include the boy scouts in this event and potentially use their camp as a parking area.

TRAIL DESIGN & BUILD CLASS – The Wisconsin Horse Council and the Department of Natural Resources work together to put on a Trail Master Certification course. It is 4 days long, mornings in the classroom and afternoons in the field implementing what was learned in the classroom. Members are encouraged to attend.

MASTER PLANNING – Fall of 2012 starts the Master Planning for Door County State Parks. Thumbs Up Riders have been collecting signatures in favor of horse trails and camping in Door County State Parks. If trails are allowed, we will be working with the Department of Natural Resources regarding planning and installation of said trails.

With the development and conservation efforts in Door County horse trails are at risk. The best way to secure your horse trail is to own it and never sale it. Or mark it so it can be protected. If you want to see places in Door County protected for horse recreation please consider becoming a member. It is great if you can attend meetings but not necessary to be a member. Members will be emailed meeting agendas and minutes, be informed of member rides, and other happenings and important meetings whether with the county or D.N.R. The strength of a horse community depends on what the local horse owners are willing to put into it. Please help us form a voice for horse recreation in Door County.
